🇵🇪 Peruvian Bishop Resigns After Scandal Involving 17 Lovers, Including a Nun

A Catholic bishop in Peru has resigned after investigations uncovered his secret affairs with 17 women — including a nun — sparking outrage across the Catholic community and beyond.

Meet the Peruvian Bishop at the Center of the Scandal

Ciro Quispe López, 51, the former bishop of Juli in southern Peru, was a respected figure within the Catholic Church — until now. Reports reveal that López engaged in secret relationships with 17 women, a revelation that led to a full Vatican inquiry and his subsequent resignation.

How the Scandal Unfolded

The Vatican launched an investigation after multiple complaints of sexual misconduct and financial irregularities. According to Peruvian journalist Paola Ugaz, the story took a dramatic turn when one of the bishop’s lovers — a nun — grew jealous of another woman, a lawyer, and leaked information about his secret affairs to yet another lover.

“It was a real soap opera but also lifted the lid on a serious abuse of power,” Ugaz told The Times. “Many of the 17 women were too scared to come forward because they were frightened of him.”

A Blow to the Church’s Reputation

The scandal has left the Catholic community in Peru shaken. For many, it has raised deeper concerns about power dynamics and accountability within the Church. The Vatican has not yet disclosed further disciplinary measures against López but confirmed that his resignation has been accepted.

Public Reaction and Broader Implications

Across Peru and Latin America, reactions to the case have been strong. Many see it as a wake-up call for greater transparency and reform within religious institutions. Church leaders have urged Catholics to focus on faith and renewal amid the controversy.

As one local observer put it, “This isn’t just about one man’s fall — it’s about the urgent need for integrity in places of spiritual authority.”

The Abu Shaaban family, it said, were trying to reach their home to inspect it when the incident happened in the Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City on Friday night. This is the deadliest single incident involving Israeli soldiers in Gaza since the start of the ceasefire eight days ago. The Israeli military said soldiers had fired at a "suspicious vehicle" that had crossed the so-called yellow line demarcating the area still occupied by Israeli forces in Gaza. Is...
